Friendship Quarry Open House
The Lafarge Friendship Quarry in Flowery Branch, Georgia hosted its 6th Annual Open House on October 10th, 2009. The quarry, which has been in operation for decades, has made this event an annual fall tradition open to the public and well attended by neighbors and the surrounding community. Parents and students attend from Friendship Elementary, a for which Lafarge is a Partner in Education, also attend. This year’s attendance totaled approximately 750 people. The open house is designed to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the quarry, its equipment, and people and an explanation about how things work to mine and process stone. Visitors are able to view and climb on large equipment used at the quarry, take a hayride around the pit, get faces painted, grab a hot dog and popcorn and even visit a pumpkin patch where small pumpkins can be decorated for the season.
This year’s theme was “Go Green with Lafarge.” Adults received a re-usable Lafarge shopping bag and the kids received a beach ball and a whistle. Cotton candy and snow cones were again the “big hit” with the kids. The event was staffed by the quarry personnel, staff from other quarries, corporate staff from the Alpharetta office, and neighbors that volunteer every year to help host this event.
